In the past year, over a hundred thousand Tennesseans have lost their job. As both a business and government executive, Bill has shown he can create jobs. When Bill began working for Pilot, the company had 800 employees; today, the company has over 14,000 employees in 39 states. As Mayor, Bill was Knoxville’s chief salesman and helped recruit thousands of jobs to the city, working with Sysco, Home and Garden Television, AmeriSteel and Green Mountain Coffee. In part because of Bill’s work, today Knox County has the lowest unemployment rate of any metropolitan area in the state.

As governor, Bill will work tirelessly to put Tennesseans back to work immediately and focus the state’s resources on ensuring Tennesseans are prepared for the jobs of the future. Bill’s economic development strategy will have both statewide and regional components. At the state level, Bill will work to create an environment conducive to recruiting new businesses and expanding existing businesses by making sure we keep taxes low and providing businesses with the infrastructure they need to succeed. Bill is 100% committed to ensuring Tennessee remains a state without an income tax.

Bill will also work with each region of the state to develop its own economic development strategy that builds on the region’s unique assets. From TVA Megasites in West Tennessee and Chattanooga to the healthcare industry in Nashville to the Tennessee Valley Technology Corridor in East Tennessee, each region has its own assets on which to build. Bill will help align these assets with the work of local universities and community colleges to ensure that economic development, workforce, and higher education funds are used in a coordinated way to further each region’s economic development strategy.
